Is your hair loss making you consider shaving your head? Or maybe you’re just looking for a drastic change of appearance? Whatever the reason, a shaved head can look great if the shave has been done the right way.
We have a few tips regarding how to shave your head effectively and with care. Follow these steps, and you’ll have a smooth shave that looks perfect afterwards, with no damage to your scalp.
Step 1: Preparation
If you’ve decided a shaved head is what you want, you’ll need a few things. The environment has to be correct, so proper lighting is required so you can see what you’re doing. You’ll need a razor, shaving gel, scissors or clippers (if some of your hair is too long to shave), a hand mirror, moisturiser, and a clean towel. Using clippers before the razor shortens your hair significantly, so less mess can be made in the bathroom sink, where you can use the razor.
Step 2: Shaving Gel
Apply a generous amount of shaving gel all over the areas you will be shaving, ensuring you cover every inch. Flatten out the gel or foam so it is spread evenly across your scalp. If you have sensitive skin, you must use a delicate shaving foam for this process so that you don’t aggravate your scalp; there’s nothing worse than a potential rash on your scalp after shaving for the first time.
Step 3: Start Shaving
With a new, clean razor, delicately shave the entire area of your head, ensuring that the shave is consistent and you haven’t missed a spot. The pressure you apply should be even across the razor but don’t force the blades harshly onto your scalp at the risk of cutting yourself. If you shave against the grain of your hair, the shave will likely be better than the alternative. Wash off the gel and hair from your blades every few strokes so there’s no collection of hair on your razor, and you can ensure an effective shave.
Step 4: Post-Shave Care
If you believe you’ve shaved as well as possible, you can wash the top of your head in the sink and pat it down with a clean towel. Ensure it is completely dry before applying some aftershave balm or moisturising cream to deter any rashes from appearing on your skin; do this routinely for the next few days because your skin might otherwise become irritated and itchy.
