David Bosley Master’s Ranch former director recently discussed how social media affects mental health.

Social media provides numerous benefits by connecting individuals around the world. However, David Bosley, Master’s Ranch’s former director, recently explained that social media could harm mental health. He discussed social media’s role in anxiety and depression and why Master’s Ranch Christian Academy limits electronic interference, so young people can recover and find purpose.

Social Media’s Link to Anxiety and Depression

The use of social media releases dopamine, known as the “feel-good chemical.” This is what draws individuals back to social media time and time again. However, apps like Instagram, Facebook, and Tik Tok can lead to social media addiction and developing anxiety or depression from social media use.

This anxiety and depression linked to social media come from numerous sources. Some users look online and see others gathering at an event but were not invited. This creates a feeling of exclusion, sadness, frustration, and loneliness. Others feel their lives are inadequate compared to the lives of others online.

Social Media and Cyberbullying

The Master’s Ranch Christian Academy experts explain that social media is also a significant source of cyberbullying. Roughly 10 percent of teens report they’ve experienced some kind of bullying on social media. This bullying can be through comments on their posts, direct messages, or other means. Some young people post rumors or lies that can leave deep emotional scars.

Limited Real Social Interaction

When individuals turn to their phones or other electronic devices, they turn away from the individuals around them. Humans benefit from real face-to-face interaction for superior physical and mental health. Social media doesn’t provide the same benefits, although many individuals believe they are socializing while commenting or interacting with other users. Those who choose social media over in-person interaction are more likely to develop anxiety and depression.

Master’s Ranch Christian Academy and Electronic Interference

David Bosley Master’s Ranch former director explained that limiting electronic interference is an essential part of the healing process for young people at Master’s Ranch.

Removing these young people from social media promotes superior face-to-face interaction and the development of long-lasting relationships. It also provides them more time to focus on their academics and the many benefits of life at the ranch, like sports, caring for animals, and more.

Master’s Ranch Christian Academy teaches vocational skills, offers numerous recreation opportunities, provides counseling, and offers an accredited Christian-based curriculum. The trusted and credentialed experts at Master’s Ranch know that eliminating social media can help young people gain confidence while reducing depression, anxiety, fear of missing out, and other mental health concerns.
