What Is Botox?
Botox is an FDA-approved, prescription medication injected into the skin at specific points. It relaxes the muscles in this area, blocking the signal between the muscle and the brain. Therefore, the less you use the muscle, the less your skin will routinely wrinkle when being expressive.
Botox is used to help with moderate to severe facial lines and for a more youthful complexion overall. It smooths the wrinkled areas and makes skin more rejuvenated.
Before you schedule any treatments, you should know what to expect. In this blog we will examine some Botox pre and post treatment instructions.
Botox Pre-Treatment Instructions
Question Time
Questions can be asked regarding specific areas that would benefit most from Botox e.g. for crow’s feet, bunny lines, frown lines or application of the marionet lines.. If you are worried about any side effects of the treatment, make sure to go over them with your injector prior to treatment. Make sure you are in safe hands by choosing a certified aesthetic nurse injector.
When to Avoid Botox
Fuel Up
Make sure you have had something substantial to eat and drink before the treatment in case of dizziness or light-headedness. Garlic and red wine should be avoided in your diet 7 days prior as it can cause bruising.
Medications
You should avoid blood thinning medication like aspirin and ibuprofen pre-Botox as that will cause bruising. Certain supplements that cause blood thinning effects, like Omega-3, vitamin E and ginseng, need to also be avoided in the run-up.
You can begin your use of arnica prior to the injections which will help to reduce bruising. Using ice packs will also help reduce any swelling post-Botox treatment.
Timing
There’s no downtime needed with Botox treatment. It is best to get it done around 2 weeks before a big event so it has time to settle.
Botox Post-Treatment Instructions
Hands Off
Do not lie down after your treatment to avoid pressure on the treated areas. You need to avoid spreading the toxin to other areas so it is advised to try not to touch or massage the face for at least 24 hours.
Follow Up
If you have any adverse reaction make sure to contact your clinician immediately. Typically, the normal effects of Botox can last up to 3 or 4 months. Schedule your follow-up appointment with the clinic once the 3 to 4 months have passed for best results.
Any Excuse to Avoid a Work Out!
Do not work out straight after Botox as the rise in your blood pressure can increase the risk of inflammation. You can resume your regular exercise after 24 hours.
No Makeup Day
Skip the makeup routine for up to 2 days after your treatment as it can increase the risk of infection at the injection sites. Take the opportunity to let the Botox treatment work its magic and settle.
