Unfortunately, we as humans all tend to fall victim to our own bias, which is the very thing that is by far the hardest to catch when it kicks in. Moreover, this prejudice soaked up in subjectivity becomes ever more present in high-stakes emotionally charged scenarios such as gambling.

DraftKings Alternatives and other online gambling platforms should primarily serve as a means of enjoyment rather than as a source of income.

This article’s goal is to explore the gambling fallacy and how it shapes addictive behavior, so let us dive right in.

Understanding the definition of the Gambler’s Fallacy

The gambler’s fallacy (also the Monte Carlo fallacy or the fallacy of the maturity of chances), is the conviction that the event is due to occur owing to the fact that it has not occurred for the time that it should have. In other words, it is a belief that something should or should not happen based on some structured pattern. In reality, however, the pattern is completely random, which makes it impossible to predict the next outcome. This fallacy is often associated with gambling activities due to their unpredictable nature that is assumed by some to be somewhat predictable.

One example of this phenomenon might be the following: there is a person losing in the roulette wheel five times in a row, gambling on black, and is now willing to gamble on red because there is a presumption in this gambler’s mind that now is surely the time when the wheel hits the right color. What the individual, like many others, fail to understand is that gambling establishments are rooted in independent events, meaning that each spin is now anyhow related with previous outcomes and does not have any implicit pattern whatsoever.

Why doesn’t this knowledge help?

The human brain is a very intricate matter. Although it has not been fully explored, it has been known that human beings are neurologically wired to seek patterns in whatever is happening, even when there is no rationale behind. In addition to this hardwiring, the brain’s neurons are prone to revolve around emotions as they create new neural connections. With gambling being an emotionally intense activity, people engaging in it get dragged towards taking the same action time and time again. The biochemistry consisting of the dopamine reward system makes a person hooked, making it hard for them to break free.

Why doesn’t this knowledge help?

What do we do about it?

Gambling Addiction, similar to any sort of addiction, is a dangerous condition that usually requires time to eliminate. The important step towards tackling it is to understand that it is actually present. While a gambling addict may not obviously realize the trouble they are in, their closed ones should take notice of the problem and address it. Reaching out to licensed professionals dealing with the matter and fostering open dialogue with the addict is the starting point on the path towards recovery. Beside that, support groups and counseling can provide valuable resources for both the individual struggling with addiction and their loved ones.
