Late Winter is the Time to Get Ready for Summer Fun Around Your Pool, Scott Lieberman Says
Even if you only use your pool on the warmest days of summer, your pool needs care 365 days a year, Scott Lieberman of Preferred Pool Management advises. Here are three things every pool operation needs to do during the off-season for smooth operations all summer long.
Check Your Pool for Potential Problems During the Winter
The maintenance philosophy at Preferred Pool Management is that it is always better to detect minor problems and fix them before they shut down a pool in the middle of the swimming season.
Lieberman urges pool owners to monitor their pool water supply’s chemical and bacteriological composition throughout the cold season. Even when you have snow on the pool cover, you need to keep tabs on the water in your pool.
You need to monitor your filter and heater periodically through the winter. You need to perform chemical checkups. And you need an experienced pool service technician to find other oddities before they become operational disasters.
Do Spring Cleaning for Your Pool
As your opening date gets closer, there is a checklist of things to do.
- Remove your pool cover. Power wash it to remove accumulated grit, grime, and salt before letting it dry and storing it away.
- Clean out debris. Do this before filling your pool.
- Fill your pool, at least up to the middle of the tile line and the skimmer openings. Even if you operate on auto-fill, you must check periodically for about a week to ensure your pool is filling correctly.
- Check and clean your pool filter. You will need to check the grids or media cartridges for holes. You will need to check all of the O-rings for a tight seal. Every five years, you need to change the sand filter.
- Reinstall plugs for the filter, heater, and pump. Make sure they stand up to the required PSI. Make sure they do not leak.
- Balance the pH in your pool water. Then shock it with chlorine to kind bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses.
- Get your pool chemicals and cleaning equipment ready.
- Prepare your comfort equipment to detect chlorine-resistant bacteria and viruses.
- Check airflow.
Scott Lieberman reminds pool operators that all these tasks can be handed to a reliable contractor.
